Is There A Real Need?
The world can be a pretty harsh place and sometimes people lose not only their jobs and homes, but they lose hope.
When we open our doors at 9 AM each Tuesday and Friday, our friends are able to come in out of the elements to a friendly environment where they can get a cup of hot coffee and an encouraging word, use the laundry facilities, and take a hot shower. When the meal time begins, our patrons are served restaurant-style . We serve a full, tasty meal. We also offer blankets, toiletries, and other personal items.
We serve people of all ages. Some of our patrons live on the street or in their car, others are low income retirees, veterans, disabled, lonely or unemployed. Others may work, but still can't make ends meet.
Soup's On! is more than just a soup kitchen. We reach out to the needs of those right here in our own community with tangible compassion in action.
How Can I Help?
DONATE GOODS
We need donations of all food items, like pasta, flour and canned goods, but we particularly appreciate perishable items like meat, cheese, eggs, etc.
VOLUNTEER
Our goal is to have an adequate enough staff so that the load of responsibility is shared among many people. We need help in the following areas:
Food Prep- We need people who can help prepare the food- cooks, assistant cooks, and people to run errands, like picking up donated bread from local bakeries.
Servers- Once our meal is prepared, we need folks to wait tables and visit with our patrons.
Clean Up- After everyone has been served, we need people to wash the pots, pans and dishes and put things away.
Coordinators- It would be a great help to have coordinators from a number of groups to organize food drives, solicit donations and recruit volunteers. We can also use people with administrative skills and occasionally people with “handy man” skills.
DONATE FINANCIALLY
As you might expect, one of our ongoing needs is for people to financially support Soup's On! In addition to the food and supply cost, our utility and cleaning expenses are a big part of making the soup kitchen viable. We're especially looking for people who will make regular monthly contributions, though any and all gifts are certainly appreciated. Financial donations are tax-deductible and receipted.
